ALASTAIR REYNOLDS (Born in Wales, 1966) is an award-winning science fiction author of nine novels and over 30 shorter works. He earned a PhD in astronomy from St Andrews, Scotland, and in 1991 moved to the Netherlands to work as an astrophysicist for the EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY. He left in 2004 to pursue writing full time, and now resides with his wife near Cardiff in Wales.
Reynolds wrote his first published (1990-1992) short stories while still a graduate student. Associated with the UK’s INTERZONE Magazine and the SPACE OPERA RENAISSANCE, his works are generally characterized as hard science fiction – reflecting both his background as a scientist, and most often embracing an outlook of noir-like moral and ethical ambiguity in tone and character.
Set over a span of several centuries, five of his novels, two novellas (including DIAMOND DOGS), and eight short stories take place within one epic future history: referred to as the REVELATION SPACE Universe, after the title of his first novel published in 2000.
Reynolds’ follow-up CHASM CITY won the 2001 British Science Fiction Award for Best Novel – and he was nominated twice more for ABSOLUTION GAP (2003) and THE PREFECT (2007). A three-time nominee for the ARTHUR C. CLARKE Award, his short story WEATHER won the Japanese National Science Fiction Convention’s Seiun Award for Best Translated Short Fiction, and in 2010, he won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History for his short story THE FIXATION.
One of the best-selling sci-fi authors in the UK, in June 2009 Reynolds signed a much-publicized one-million-pound deal with GOLLANCZ for ten books over the next ten years. He is currently working on the first novel in a trilogy: BLUE REMEMBERED EARTH – Book One of POSEIDON’S CHILDREN.
